The Leap Year and the Summer Olympics

Author: Renato De La Rosa, MD

The Summer Olympics which is held on leap years (every 4 years) are no coincidence. To “leap” is to jump!

The Olympics first started in Athens, Greece around 700 B.C. The first Olympics only consisted of three events: Long jump, High Jump, and 110m hurdles. All events involved jumping, or as it was more commonly called in ancient Greece, ‘leaping’. Hence the first Olympic events became known as on the streets as ‘Leap Day’.

The Olympic Games were initially held on the first day of March and later was moved to February 29 (one day event), the so called “Leap Day” and was later called the “Leap Year”.

Those competed in Athens, Greece, were later called “athletes” from the word “athens”.

Have a great, physically active day to everyone!
