Adam & Eve: The Evolution of the Brain

It’s good to trace the evolution of the brain. I was surprised that the different parts of the brain did not evolve or develop at the same time. What I’ve learned is that the brain stem (the so called “Reptilian brain”) evolved around 400 million years ago. The mammalian brain where the Limbic System resides evolved around 200 million years ago and the last that developed was the neocortex, including the prefrontal cortex, around 3 million years ago (some neuroscientists would say about 10 million years ago). Most often, the one who dominates in the decision-making is the more “senior” mammalian brain/limbic system! Emotional brain usually wins over Logical brain.

If we apply this to biblical history, God should have forgiven Adam and Eve, because they had not developed their prefrontal cortex during those early times. They had no brain for good judgment and impulse control. Their primitive brains were just for blood pressure, heart rate, respiration and temperature, mainly to sustain life.

At the very start (first 400 million years), Adam & Eve, I assume, were predominantly brainstem and spinal cord. If they were able to speak, did they have speech center? They had neocortex?? But, I really don’t know the answer.

When God kicked Adam & Eve out from the garden, here was the curse unto them:

Genesis 3:19
(King James Version)
“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat BREAD!”

Adam: “Pardon me, Lord. May I ask you a question? What is a “bread”? In the garden, we did not cook nor bake because we have not discovered fire yet. We ate “whole food”.

God paused for a second:
“Okay, acquitted!”

It should have been a happy ending.

Have a nice day, everyone!
