So Many Times We Hated Our Wheelchairs: A Mind-set Shift

Author: Renato De La Rosa, MD

Next time we see patients on a wheelchair in our office, share this story with them and make a mind-set shift, reframing the mind of both the doctor and the patient.
I once talked to a man who uses wheelchair almost all throughout his life. I asked him how it feels being confined in a wheelchair. And he answered back smiling, “I’m not confined to my wheelchair. I am liberated by it. If it wasn’t for my wheelchair, I would be bed-bound and never able to leave my house.”

It is worth looking at the way we perceive things around us. His shift of perspective transforms positively how he lived his life. A lot of times we have our own “wheelchair” and hated it so much.
